Melanoma is a type of skin cancer which usually occurs on the parts of the body that have been overexposed to the sun.

Surgery is the mainstay of therapy for early stage melanoma and for the resection of an isolated metastatic melanoma site. There are several different types of surgeries that are regularly performed to treat melanoma. Each surgery is different and depends on individual factors.

After thr surgery you will be able to go home the same day. For more complex surgery, you may need to stay overnight at the hospital.

It will take a couple of weeks for your incision to heal.

During this time, you may have:

  • Bruising
  • Minor pain
  • Redness and swelling of incision site
  • Infection
  • Swelling in an arm or leg, called lymphedema, after having lymph nodes removed
  • Scarring
